The Director for the show: To answer all the critics for the show Ballroom for 5ive directing I wanted to share my opinion on the matter. Every show has its specifics, problems and difficulties some of which as a director I discover only after the show has begun. Some of it I can participate, others not so and third appears after the fact as it happens in live shows. I'm not looking for excuses here. When you try something there's always the possibility to fail or make a mistake. The important thing is what you do after and how you use it to get on the right track. I hope you are aware that our working rhythm rarely allows us much time for rehearsal – the time to try, fail, finding the right way. On the other hand I believe this to be one of the main charms of our shows. Everything is happening right in the moment, it's born during action, it's not staged and overly polished. Of course there are risks here – the show may turn out to be good or not. It's a whole new topic though how fatal one failed show is in the light of the previous and upcoming premium shows. Actually some of the mistakes I saw even during the show but real problems became apparent to me after I watched the recording. As a principal the viewers sometimes don't know what exactly they didn't like or can't explain it clearly. They are adamant about one thing though – they didn't like it therefore it was a bad show.
The main weaknesses of the show as I saw it:
Too much space between the models in the big room – this makes shooting hard and leaves the impression of lost models and too much unused space. Also it doesn't makes sense people who are supposed to have fun together to isolate themselves in groups too far away from each other.
The space between the groups of models made them unable to trace what's going on with the others and also to fight for the camera attention. And this brings unwanted tension to the viewer. The action lacked unity. In different places, far away from each other, things were happening with no connection in between. At the end the cameras dragged one action or another in view frustrating the audience with the lack of consistency. May be this made some viewers mentioning censorship but it wasn't that at all - our rules are always the same about that.
The models were distracted. This is result of both – the wrong mood they started with and the need to regroup and change partners and focus. Just when they've reached the exciting part of their interaction they had to switch partners to compensate the big space in the room to get the needed frame.
We failed to explain the models where exactly we expected the eroticism to come in this set, that it's not just some dancing, jumping around, drinking and talking but it's carefully concentrated interactions. They didn't understand the concept of the show – 5 women staying for after party to end the night in each others company.
What we will do to make it better next time:
Models will be closer to each other and will move in the room in one package followed by the shooting team. This way we will see different frames from the Ballroom in all the models in it as it was with the series Alone in the Ballroom.
There won't be overlapping actions - all the girls will participate in unity.
There won't be regrouping and staged - all of them will make a show together.
We will explain the concept to the models better.
